Daniel Webster – The Staunch Federalist

The United States political sphere has seen several leaders and pioneers who vastly contributed to the growth and development of the constitution and helped establish a strong political system. Daniel Webster is a prominent political personality who had a strong and successful legal career prior to his political career. Born in the year 1782, he was a staunch supporter of federal government and throughout his political period he stood by the principle. He maintained his support for federalism all throughout his career in politics and has managed to effectively pass on the message with his exceptional and eloquent speeches.

A strong federalist

Right from his formative years, Webster was strongly impacted and influenced by federalist supporters. Being brought up by an ardent federalist father and taught by predominant federalists in Dartmouth, Webster was a fierce Federalist too. At various instances of his political career, Webster has clearly manifested his ardent support for this particular system of government.

Webster’s stand on federalism

Being a leading proponent of federal government, he took action to raise the economy of the country by way of introducing transportation movements, national banking system and protective tariffs. In the early political period which is around 1813 to 1817, he was known to opposed the 1812 war and also eager to nullify it. As he became a congressman and senator that happened between the years 1823 to 1850, he came across as a political leader highly supportive of federal actions.

Brilliant speeches

Daniel Webster was a powerful attorney and famous politician who strived to upheld the power of the federal government over state government. He delivered several remarkable speeches in favor of federal government. Webster strongly rebutted Senator Hayne’s doctrine that put forward the state’s power to declare a Federal law to be null and void. It needs to be noted that Daniel Webster’s rebuttal was put on the front page of the newspaper. It is also possible to find a famous painting of Webster debating with Hayne which could be found in Fanuiel Hall in Boston. His arguments were brilliant which made him stand out from the rest.


Throughout the course of his political career, Webster maintained a strong stance that federalism is absolutely important and only a federal government can direct the country in the best possible manner. He has a strong inclination towards federal rules and laws and he maintained a perfect stance from the start to the end.
